We may regard the present state of the universe as the effect of its past and the cause of its future. An intellect which at a certain moment would know all forces that set nature in motion, and all positions of all items of which nature is composed, if this intellect were also vast enough to submit these data to analysis, it would embrace in a single formula the movements of the greatest bodies of the universe and those of the tiniest atom; for such an intellect nothing would be uncertain and the future, just like the past, would be present before its eyes.

Laplace wrote the essay after a career that had brought celestial mechanics to mathematical perfection: his five-volume Traité de mécanique céleste showed that the motions of the planets could be derived, with ever greater precision, from Newton's laws. The Introduction draws the philosophical conclusion. Since the laws of motion are deterministic — given the state of a system, all later states follow — a sufficiently vast intellect knowing all forces and positions could embrace the whole history of the cosmos in a single formula. The passage is the bridge from Newtonian physics to the metaphysics of determinism.

Meaning & Interpretation

The demon is not a claim about what we can know but about what the world is like. If the laws are deterministic, then the future is fixed by the present, and the only limits on prediction are limits of knowledge and computation — not of nature. The passage thereby sets the terms for the modern debate: the problem of free will becomes the question whether human decisions are part of the mechanical order the demon computes, and the problem of prediction becomes the question whether the demon is even in principle possible. Chaos theory would later show that the demon's "vast enough" analysis faces obstacles of a different kind, but Laplace's formulation of the thesis has not been improved upon.

Legacy

Laplace's demon became the standard image of determinism — the clockwork universe in its purest form. It was invoked by Popper in The Open Universe as the target of his critique of scientific determinism; it frames the free will debate in the Stanford Encyclopedia's entry on causal determinism; and it continues to structure discussions of predictability, chaos, and quantum mechanics. No other single paragraph has done more to define the metaphysical problem of the modern age.
