Noddings was challenging approaches that treated moral reasoning chiefly as applying abstract principles. She began instead with the relation between one-caring and cared-for, including attention to how care is received.

Meaning

Calling care a “primary aim” does not mean abandoning mathematics, history, or scientific accuracy. It means educational means cannot be separated from the kind of persons and relations they help produce. A school cannot coherently teach respect through humiliating procedures and treat the contradiction as irrelevant to its curriculum.

“Maintenance and enhancement” also indicates that caring capacities already exist in communities. Education should sustain and extend them rather than claim to manufacture morality from nothing.
