Biography

Andy Clark was born in 1957 in England. He studied at the University of Sussex, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1979, and at the University of Stirling, where he completed his doctorate in philosophy in 1984. Clark has held chairs at the University of Washington in St. Louis, Indiana University, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Sussex, where he is professor of cognitive philosophy. He has been a visiting professor at Oxford and a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He is one of the most influential philosophers of cognitive science of his generation, best known for the extended mind thesis developed with David Chalmers and for his later work on predictive processing.

The Extended Mind Thesis

The extended mind thesis (EMT) is the claim that some mental processes and states are partly constituted by processes and states outside the organism. Clark and Chalmers defended this with the "parity principle": if a part of the world functions as a process that, were it done in the head, we would have no hesitation in recognizing as part of the cognitive process, then that part of the world is part of the cognitive process. Otto's notebook is not merely a tool he uses to remember; it is part of his memory. The thesis is a form of "active externalism": the environment does not just causally influence cognition; it can constitute cognition.

The Natural-Born Cyborg

Clark's book Natural-Born Cyborgs (2003) develops the evolutionary and anthropological dimensions of the thesis. Humans are "natural-born cyborgs": we are constitutionally disposed to merge with our tools, and our distinctive intelligence has always been an intelligence-with-tools. Language, writing, numbers, and institutions are not external additions to a self-contained mind but the very medium through which human cognition operates. This is why we are so good at using smartphones, notebooks, and computer systems: technological extension is not a departure from our nature but its deepest expression.
