Anil Seth: Controlled Hallucination & Mind
Biography
Anil Seth was born in 1972 in Oxford, England. He studied natural sciences at the University of Cambridge, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1994, and he completed his doctorate in computer science and neuroscience at the University of Sussex in 2001, where he worked with the artificial life and adaptive systems community. Seth has spent most of his career at the University of Sussex, where he is professor of cognitive and computational neuroscience and co-director of the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science, which he helped found. He is also the founding editor-in-chief of the journal Neuroscience of Consciousness and has become one of the most prominent public voices in consciousness science, known for his TED talks, his popular book Being You, and his appearances on the BBC's "Royal Institution Christmas Lectures."

Seth's most famous claim is that perception is a controlled hallucination. The brain does not receive the world as it is; it generates a model of the world and uses sensory signals to test and correct that model. Seth uses the metaphor of "controlled hallucination": our experience is a hallucination — a construction of the brain — but it is controlled, because it is continuously constrained and corrected by sensory input. We are all hallucinating all the time, Seth says; when we agree about our hallucinations, we call it "reality."
This account dissolves the sharp distinction between perception and imagination or illusion. Illusions are not rare failures of perception but windows into its normal construction: in hallucinations, dreams, and drug experiences, the top-down predictions escape the control of sensory input. The practical lesson is that perception is always an active construction — a point with implications for everything from eyewitness testimony to virtual reality.
Predictive Processing
The computational engine of Seth's account is predictive processing (also called predictive coding or the free energy principle framework). The brain maintains a hierarchical generative model of the causes of its sensory inputs; it predicts the sensory signal at each level and adjusts the model to minimize prediction error. Perception is the brain's inference about the hidden causes of its inputs — a process that is fundamentally Bayesian. Seth has applied this framework to the specific problems of consciousness: the contents of consciousness correspond to the brain's best predictions; consciousness itself may be understood as the way certain predictive processes feel from the inside. He has also proposed the notion of "prediction error minimization as the neural correlate of consciousness" and investigated how the brain's predictions about its own internal state (interoception) shape emotion and the sense of self.
The Beast Machine Theory of the Self
Seth's account of the self is embodied and interoceptive. Drawing on the tradition of Antonio Damasio and on the phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty, Seth argues that the self is grounded in the brain's regulation and prediction of the body's internal state. He calls this the "beast machine" view, borrowing a phrase from Descartes: the self is the experience of being a machine — a body — that must regulate itself to survive. The feeling of being a self, on this view, is a "hallucination" too: a construction of the brain that tracks the state of the body and its relation to the world. This account connects the science of consciousness to the study of emotion, homeostasis, and the embodied mind.
The Illusion of the Self
Seth's conclusion about the self is deflationary but not nihilistic. The self is not a thing but a process — the brain's ongoing construction of the organism as an agent. It is "the best guess the brain makes about the causes of its own sensory signals," including signals from inside the body. The experience of being a unified, persisting self is a useful construction, not a discovery of a soul. This places Seth's account alongside the no-self theories of Thomas Metzinger and the Buddhist tradition, though Seth is careful to insist that the self, while constructed, is not an illusion in the dismissive sense: it is a real, functional process of the brain.

The controlled hallucination thesis has become one of the most widely cited formulations of the predictive processing view of perception, and it has reshaped the popular conversation about perception, illusion, and reality — his TED talk "Your brain hallucinates your conscious reality" has been viewed tens of millions of times. Within the field, Seth's emphasis on the embodied and interoceptive foundations of the self has pushed consciousness research away from purely cognitive, cortical accounts toward the body, aligning it with the enactive tradition and with the work of Damasio.
