Ivan Illich

Biography

Ivan Illich was an Austrian-born social critic, priest, and historian who lived and worked across Europe, the United States, Mexico, and Latin America. He co-founded the Center for Intercultural Documentation in Cuernavaca, a meeting place for critical study of development, institutions, and missionary activity.

Educational Contribution

Illich’s educational importance lies in his critique of compulsory institutional schooling. He argued that schools teach a hidden lesson: that learning is the product of professional delivery, that credentials certify worth, and that advancement requires continued consumption of institutional services.

Key Ideas

Deschooling did not mean ending all teaching or study. Illich proposed learning webs that connect people seeking skills, peers with shared interests, educators, and public resources. “Convivial tools” enlarge people’s capacity to act without making them dependent on expert systems they cannot control.
