Lawrence Kohlberg

Biography

Lawrence Kohlberg was an American psychologist who studied moral reasoning and taught at the University of Chicago and Harvard. Influenced by Jean Piaget, he used interviews about moral dilemmas to investigate changes in the structure of reasons people give for judgments.

Educational Contribution

Kohlberg shifted moral education from transmitting approved virtues toward developing reasoning through discussion, role-taking, and participation. His just-community experiments attempted to align school governance with moral learning rather than confine ethics to lessons.

Key Ideas

The stage theory grouped reasoning into preconventional, conventional, and postconventional levels, each with two stages. Classification concerned the form of justification, not whether a person chose the researcher’s preferred answer. Development was proposed as an ordered movement toward more general and reversible principles.

Influence and Debate

Kohlberg influenced moral dilemma discussion and developmental psychology. Carol Gilligan criticized the framework’s treatment of care and its male-skewed early samples. Cross-cultural research challenges claims of universality, and sophisticated reasoning does not guarantee moral action. The theory remains useful when treated as a hypothesis about reasoning, not a complete ranking of moral persons or cultures.
