Maxine Greene

Biography

Maxine Greene was an American philosopher of education, author, and longtime professor at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her work drew on existential philosophy, literature, phenomenology, and the arts. She taught and wrote against forms of schooling that render people passive before routines and social arrangements.

Educational Contribution

Greene made imagination central to freedom and social understanding. Aesthetic education does not use art merely to decorate another lesson. Sustained encounters with works of art can interrupt habitual perception and make other lives and possibilities newly visible.
