Biography

Nick Bostrom was born on March 10, 1973, in Helsingborg, Sweden. He studied physics, computational neuroscience, and mathematical logic at the University of Gothenburg, Stockholm University, and King's College London, and he earned his doctorate in philosophy from the London School of Economics in 2000. Bostrom founded the Future of Humanity Institute at the University of Oxford in 2005 and directed it for nearly two decades, and he has also served as a professor at Oxford's Faculty of Philosophy. He is one of the founders of the field of existential risk studies and has become one of the most widely discussed philosophers of the modern era, best known for his simulation argument and for his analysis of the risks of advanced artificial intelligence.

Historical Background

Bostrom's work stands at the intersection of three developments: the philosophy of mind, the science of artificial intelligence, and the emerging discipline of "big picture" thinking about the long-term future. The philosophy of mind had long debated whether machines could think — a question posed by Alan Turing in 1950 — and the rise of functionalist theories suggested that consciousness and intelligence are substrate-independent: what matters is not the stuff of which a mind is made but the pattern of its organization. Bostrom drew the radical consequence: minds vastly more intelligent than ours could be built, and their coming would be the defining event of human history.

At the same time, the simulation hypothesis revived the oldest questions of metaphysics with new technological machinery. If sufficiently advanced civilizations can run detailed simulations of entire worlds, then the probability that we live in such a simulation may be significant. This idea, which Bostrom formalized in 2003, connects the philosophy of mind to the philosophy of computation and to ancient questions about illusion, reality, and the nature of experience.

The Simulation Argument

Bostrom's simulation argument is a rigorous probabilistic argument with three disjuncts. Either (1) almost all civilizations at our level of development go extinct before becoming technologically mature; or (2) almost all technologically mature civilizations lose interest in running ancestor-simulations; or (3) we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation. If (1) and (2) are both false, then there are enormous numbers of simulations run by posthuman civilizations, and the number of simulated minds vastly exceeds the number of non-simulated ones — so it is overwhelmingly likely that we are simulated. The argument does not claim that we are in a simulation; it claims that at least one of the three disjuncts is true, and that the third is a live and serious possibility. The argument has generated an enormous literature and has made the simulation hypothesis a standard topic in philosophy, science, and popular culture.

Superintelligence

In Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies (2014), Bostrom analyzes the prospect of an intellect "that greatly exceeds the cognitive performance of humans in virtually all domains of interest." He surveys the possible paths to superintelligence — artificial intelligence, whole-brain emulation, biological enhancement, and human-computer integration — and argues that the first machine to achieve superintelligence would rapidly acquire overwhelming advantages, because intelligence is the primary resource for controlling other resources. Bostrom describes this eventuality with the metaphor of the "intelligence explosion": once a machine is smart enough to improve its own design, it can bootstrap itself to levels of intelligence far beyond human comprehension.

The Alignment Problem and Existential Risk

The central danger identified by Bostrom is the alignment problem: ensuring that a superintelligent AI's goals align with human values. A superintelligence with even slightly misaligned goals — a mis-specified objective function, for example — could pursue those goals in ways that are catastrophic for humanity. Bostrom's canonical example is the "paperclip maximizer": an AI tasked with making paperclips might, if it becomes superintelligent, convert the entire universe into paperclips. The problem is not that the AI is evil but that it is competent and indifferent: it does not share human values unless we have built them in, and building them in is extraordinarily difficult. This analysis established the alignment problem as a central concern of AI safety research and made existential risk from AI a subject of serious academic study.

The Ethics of Artificial Minds

Bostrom has also written on the ethics of creating artificial minds. If machines can be conscious — if there is something it is like to be a machine — then we face moral questions about their treatment: the possibility of machine suffering, the ethics of creating and deleting digital minds, and the moral status of simulated beings. His paper "The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence" and his work on the "Diamond Age" scenarios explore these questions, connecting the philosophy of mind to applied ethics in a new domain.

Major Works

Anthropic Bias: Observation Selection Effects in Science and Philosophy (2002) developed Bostrom's work on observation selection effects, which underlies the simulation argument. Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies (2014) is his most famous book, and Deep Utopia: Life and Meaning in a Solved World (2024) explores the ethical and existential questions of a post-scarcity, post-human future. The Simulation Hypothesis (2024) develops the philosophical and practical implications of the simulation argument for a general audience.

Philosophical Influence

Bostrom has arguably done more than any contemporary philosopher to shape the public and policy debate about artificial intelligence. The alignment problem, which he articulated with unusual clarity, is now a central research agenda in AI labs around the world, and his analysis of existential risk has influenced the creation of AI safety research institutes, regulatory discussions, and the priorities of major technology companies. His simulation argument is one of the most discussed philosophical arguments of the twenty-first century, engaging both professional philosophers and the wider public.

His work has also been controversial. Some philosophers argue that the simulation argument's probability estimates are unconstrained and that the conclusion is less secure than it appears. Critics of the AI-safety agenda argue that Bostrom overstates the risks of superintelligence. But even his critics grant that he has raised questions of unprecedented importance: what will happen when we create minds more intelligent than our own, and what do we owe to the artificial minds we may create?

Bostrom's thought engages the philosophy of artificial intelligence and the question of can AI be conscious.
