Nihilism

Nihilism is the view that life has no objective meaning, purpose, or value — that nothing truly matters, and that the traditional foundations of ethics, religion, and truth have collapsed. The term was made famous by Friedrich Nietzsche, who diagnosed the "death of God" and asked what would become of humanity once it lost its highest values. Nihilism is often feared as a descent into despair, but thinkers from Nietzsche to Camus and Frankl have also treated it as a challenge to be met: a clearing of the ground on which new, self-chosen meaning can be built — the possibility of what is now called optimistic nihilism.
