John Dewey’s account of reflective thought begins when routine action is interrupted and a situation becomes doubtful. Inquiry reconstructs the situation rather than merely attaching blame.

Twentieth-century work on formative assessment made this insight operational. Feedback is useful when it helps answer where the learner is going, how the current attempt compares, and what action should come next. A score alone may rank performance while providing almost no path to improvement.

Philosophical Perspectives

Fallibilism holds that even responsible beliefs can be mistaken. This is not skepticism about everything; it is a reason to make correction possible. An intellectually humble learner can separate “this answer failed” from “I am incapable.” At the same time, educational institutions should not romanticize failure. Errors involving safety, unequal consequences, or preventable harm demand safeguards and accountability.

There is also a justice question. A classroom that publicly humiliates some students for errors while treating others’ mistakes as creativity does not distribute permission to learn equally. The ethical response combines high expectations with explanations, revision opportunities, and consistent standards.

Modern Relevance

After a failed attempt, use a short error analysis: state the intended outcome; mark the first point where reasoning diverged; classify the cause; write a corrected rule; and solve a different example without looking at the correction. The last step matters because recognition is weaker than independent transfer.

Digital tools can provide immediate feedback, but speed is not the same as insight. If software simply reveals an answer, the learner may correct the surface response without changing the mental model. Better feedback prompts explanation and another attempt. The wisdom of error is therefore neither fear nor celebration. It is disciplined repair: make the failure legible, revise what caused it, and carry the better judgment into the next situation.
