Practical Wisdom in Education: Judging What This Situation Needs

Definition

Practical wisdom addresses decisions for which a rule, dataset, or technique is relevant but insufficient. A teacher may know a late-work policy and still need to judge whether its purpose is served in a case involving illness, deception, disability, or repeated avoidance. The wise decision identifies the educational good at stake, the relevant particulars, competing duties, and likely consequences.

This is not intuition exempt from scrutiny. Experienced people can carry bias as well as insight. Practical wisdom must give reasons, consult evidence, learn from affected people, and remain open to review.

Historical Development

Aristotle distinguished practical wisdom, or phronesis, from theoretical knowledge and technical production. It concerns action in variable human affairs and joins good deliberation with ethically formed character. Professional traditions later developed case judgment through apprenticeship, precedent, supervision, and reflection.

Modern management often seeks consistency through protocols and metrics. These can protect against arbitrariness and preserve hard-won knowledge. Donald Schön nevertheless showed how professionals think within uncertain situations where the problem itself must be framed before a standard solution can be applied.

Philosophical Perspectives

Rule-based ethics asks whether action respects duties and rights; consequential reasoning considers likely effects; virtue ethics asks what a good practitioner would perceive and do; care ethics attends to relationship and dependency. Educational judgment often needs all four. A decision can produce average benefit while violating a student's right, or follow a rule while ignoring a morally relevant difference.

Justice requires consistency, but consistency means treating like cases alike and relevant differences differently. The hard work is explaining which difference is relevant to the purpose rather than convenient to authority.

Modern Relevance

Use a decision note for difficult cases: define the educational purpose; state verified facts and uncertainties; identify people affected; list rights, rules, and evidence; compare feasible actions; choose a proportionate response; and set a review point. Invite another professional to challenge the framing when stakes are high.

AI recommendations cannot carry moral responsibility for the outcome. They may summarize information, but they do not know the learner as a participant in a shared institution and may reproduce hidden assumptions. Practical wisdom keeps human judgment accountable: neither blindly follow the system nor celebrate personal discretion, but connect particular action to public reasons and learn from what follows.
