Verification is the act of checking that a claim is so — of subjecting assertion to test. A claim is verified when it is shown to agree with observation, experiment, or some independent record of what is the case. Verification is the bridge between saying and knowing: anyone can assert, but only what can be checked earns the title of established fact. The concept operates at different scales: a journalist verifies a fact before publishing it, a scientist verifies a result through replication, an auditor verifies an account, a witness verifies an alibi. In each case the structure is the same — the claim is exposed to evidence that could, in principle, show it false, and it survives. The empiricist tradition made verification the criterion of meaningful inquiry. Francis Bacon urged that claims about nature be checked by experiment, not accepted on authority or plausibility. The sharpest formulation came from logical positivism in the early twentieth century. The wisdom of verification is the habit of checking before believing. The unverified mind accepts claims that are familiar, comforting, or fluently presented; the wise mind asks how a claim could be checked and whether it has been. This habit has a social dimension: verification is the antidote to trusting authority or fashion instead of evidence, and it is a moral practice, since passing on unverified claims makes one responsible for spreading them. Wisdom also knows the limits of verification: not everything can be tested by experiment, some things are checked by coherence or by the track record of their sources, and verification takes time and resources that must be proportioned to the stakes of the claim. The wise person verifies what matters, proportionately, and remains aware that verification, like all human activity, is itself fallible.

Modern Relevance

Verification is the operating principle of the sciences, which institutionalize it in experimental design, peer review, and replication; of journalism, through source-checking and fact-checking; and of engineering and medicine, through testing and quality control. In the digital environment, the collapse of editorial gatekeeping has made individual verification a civic duty: before sharing, before believing, before acting, check. The demand to "verify, don't trust" is the modern form of an ancient discipline, and its absence is the engine of misinformation. Tools like source triangulation, reverse image search, and skepticism toward anonymous claims are all applications of the verification principle to the information age.

Verification presupposes testability — the property of claims that can be checked — and relies on evidence. It serves truth-seeking and supports objectivity. Verification is paired with falsifiability in Popper's account of science, and it is guarded by rigor and consistency in how checks are performed.
