Against Method, published in 1975, is Paul Feyerabend's manifesto against the idea that science has — or can have — a universal method. Feyerabend was a student of Karl Popper, a colleague of Thomas Kuhn, and a participant in the great post-war debates about scientific rationality, and the book grew out of a planned collaborative work with Imre Lakatos that was never finished. Its subtitle announces the thesis: "Outline of an Anarchistic Theory of Knowledge." Feyerabend argued that the historical record refutes every attempt to codify scientific method — the rationalist ideal of the positivists, Popper's falsificationism, and even Kuhn's paradigms all fail as descriptions or prescriptions. The book's provocative formula, "anything goes," is not a recipe for chaos but a conclusion: if no rule has been obeyed by all successful science, then the only principle that does not hinder progress is to proceed without fixed rules. The conclusion is methodological pluralism: no single method can be privileged, and the demand that all science conform to one set of rules is authoritarian and false.

The book also foreshadowed the sociology of science — the study of science as a social and cultural institution — and it remains the canonical statement of the case for methodological pluralism and against scientific authority. Its political dimension — that science must not be allowed to dominate other ways of knowing — anticipated later debates over the public role of science, expertise, and the treatment of non-Western knowledge traditions. Feyerabend's deepest point survives: scientific rationality, if it exists, is a set of skills and judgments exercised in particular contexts, not an algorithm that can be written down and enforced.

For a first reading, Chapters 1-5 and the concluding chapter give the full sweep; the Galileo chapters can be dipped into for the details. The fourth edition (2010) includes a new introduction.
