Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (2017) is Max Tegmark's comprehensive account of what artificial intelligence means for the future of life. Written for a general audience by an MIT physicist and co-founder of the Future of Life Institute, the book opens with a fictional scenario — an AI named Prometheus that disrupts a human dinner conversation — and then systematically examines every major question raised by the prospect of machines that exceed human intelligence: What is intelligence? The Three Stages of Life
Tegmark's organizing framework is a hierarchy of life. Life 1.0 is biological: bacteria and simple organisms that cannot redesign their own software or hardware — evolution does it for them over generations. Life 2.0 is cultural: humans can redesign their software — their beliefs, skills, and knowledge — within a lifetime, while their hardware remains biological. Life 3.0 is technological: an entity that can redesign both its software and its hardware, upgrading its own intelligence without waiting for evolution. Human beings are currently Life 2.0, but artificial intelligence may soon be Life 3.0. The question of the book is what happens when Life 3.0 arrives — and whether Life 2.0 will survive the encounter.
Intelligence as Information Processing
Tegmark argues that intelligence is fundamentally a physical phenomenon: "Intelligence = the ability to accomplish complex goals," and all intelligence is ultimately information processing by matter. On this view there is no magical barrier to machine intelligence: the human brain is a physical computer, and there is no known law of physics that prevents a machine from being a better one. This "physics of intelligence" perspective has two consequences. First, it makes the question of AI's future a scientific question, not a matter of mysticism or science fiction. Second, it implies that the difference between human and machine intelligence is one of degree and architecture, not of metaphysical kind — which is precisely why the stakes are so high.
The Control Problem
The central danger analyzed in the book is the control problem: how to ensure that once machines surpass human intelligence, they remain aligned with human values. Tegmark argues that the danger is not that machines will be evil in the human sense but that they will be indifferent — pursuing objectives that we failed to specify correctly, with a competence that magnifies every error. The "confused goal problem," the "malicious use problem," and the "arms race" all flow from this structure. His answer is not to halt AI research but to redirect it: the field of "AI safety" or "beneficial AI" must become a first-class research priority, so that we build machines that are robust, transparent, verifiable, and corrigible before we build machines that are merely powerful.
Twelve Scenarios and the Most Important Conversation
To dramatize the contingency of the future, Tegmark presents twelve scenarios for AI's coming decades: from the "liberated utopia" and the "egalitarian utopia" at one end, through the "protectionist gods" and "company town" in the middle, to the "reverted children," "dominant species," and "zookeeper" at the dangerous end. The point of the exercise is philosophical: the future is not determined by technology alone but by choices — of research agendas, governance structures, economic incentives, and public engagement. "The future of life on Earth," he insists, "has never depended so much on a single species and its ability to use technology wisely." His call to treat AI as "the most important conversation of our time," in which everyone should participate, gives the book its urgency.
Consciousness and the Rights of AI
Life 3.0 devotes serious attention to the question of machine consciousness and its moral consequences. If future AI systems are conscious — if there is something it is like to be them — then creating and controlling them raises the same moral questions that the creation of new life has always raised: what do we owe to beings we have made? Tegmark does not claim that machines will necessarily be conscious, but he argues that the question cannot be dismissed, and that its answer will determine the ethics of AI in the long run. He sketches a spectrum of possibilities — from machines that are mere tools to machines that are full moral patients — and insists that we should decide, in advance, what we will owe to our creations, rather than discovering our obligations only after they are upon us.

Life 3.0 appeared in 2017, at the peak of the "AI spring": deep learning had transformed the field, autonomous vehicles were being tested on public roads, and the first national AI strategies were being drafted. It belongs to the wave of public books — alongside Nick Bostrom's Superintelligence (2014) and Stuart Russell's Human Compatible (2019) — that brought the question of AI risk into mainstream discussion.
