Paul Goodman on Compulsory Miseducation

Historical Context

Goodman published Compulsory Miseducation in 1964 after Growing Up Absurd. He argued that standardized mass schooling prolonged dependency, separated youth from adult society, and socialized students into national and organizational norms. The sentence introduces alternatives to what he calls a compulsory trap.

His proposals included some classes with no school, the city as school, community adults as educators, work, travel, and smaller institutions.

Meaning

Goodman grants a protective function to compulsory law: it can give children space beyond parental control. But the same law becomes harmful if every child must remain in an institution that wastes time, cages liberty, or offers no meaningful path.

The formulation refuses an easy choice between family authority and school authority. Children can be dominated in either setting, so changing location does not by itself create freedom.

Philosophical Interpretation

The quote applies a proportionality test to compulsory education: does coercion secure an educational and protective good unavailable through less restrictive arrangements? It also asks whether alternatives carry real recognition and future opportunity.

Goodman's proposals may underestimate the safety, expertise, and equality public systems can provide. His challenge remains useful for flexible pathways, apprenticeships, community learning, and re-entry. Compulsion needs continual justification by what learners can actually access and become, not by the institution's mere existence.
