First, observation is paradigm-laden: what counts as a fact depends on the framework, so the same data can be read differently in the old and new paradigms. Second, theories are incommensurable: competing paradigms do not share a neutral language or standard in which they can be compared point by point — hence "crisis" and conversion play a role in revolutionary science that the rationalist picture cannot accommodate. Third, progress is not simple accumulation: the new paradigm solves the crisis but may not preserve everything the old paradigm achieved; science, for Kuhn, progresses, but not by simple addition. Critics accused Kuhn of relativism — of making theory choice a matter of mob psychology. Kuhn replied that he was describing how science actually works and that the values of objectivity — accuracy, consistency, scope, simplicity, fruitfulness — still govern choice within a community.
