Progressive and degenerating programmes: The distinction between progressive and degenerating programmes provided a criterion for rational theory choice that Kuhn's account seemed to lack. A programme that consistently generates novel predictions is rationally preferable to one that only produces post hoc explanations — even if both are compatible with the evidence. This offered a way to make comparative judgments without requiring certainty or decisive falsification.

The legacy and its limits: Lakatos's methodology has been widely influential, but it has also faced criticism. Critics have argued that the distinction between progressive and degenerating programmes is easier to draw in hindsight than in real time, and that scientists may rationally persist with a degenerating programme in the hope that it will recover. Feyerabend charged that Lakatos's framework, for all its sophistication, amounted to "a verbal ornament" that did not actually constrain scientific practice.
