Biography

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was born in Ulm, in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg in the German Empire, to a Jewish family. His father, Hermann Einstein, was a salesman and engineer whose business ventures moved the family to Munich in 1880. Einstein attended the Luitpold Gymnasium there before leaving Germany at fifteen to join his family in Italy, eventually completing his secondary education in Switzerland. In 1896 he enrolled at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, graduating in 1900 with a diploma in mathematics and physics.

Unable to secure a university position, Einstein took a post as a technical expert third class at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern.
