Gloria Ladson-Billings

Biography

Gloria Ladson-Billings is an American education scholar and professor emerita at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her research on successful teachers of African American students developed culturally relevant pedagogy and helped bring critical race theory into educational scholarship.

Ladson-Billings identified three linked criteria: academic success, cultural competence, and critical consciousness. The framework is not a collection of culturally themed activities.
