James A. Banks

Biography

James A. Banks is an American education scholar whose work helped establish multicultural education as a field of research, curriculum, and teacher education. Raised in segregated Arkansas, he later became a professor at the University of Washington and founded its Center for Multicultural Education.

Banks moved multicultural education beyond adding heroes or festivals. He developed a multidimensional framework addressing content integration, the knowledge-construction process, prejudice reduction, equity pedagogy, and an empowering school culture.
