Biography
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was born on July 1, 1646, in Leipzig, Germany, into a family of academics and civil servants. A prodigy, he taught himself Latin and Greek by the age of twelve and entered the University of Leipzig at fifteen. He studied law, philosophy, and mathematics at Leipzig, Jena, and Altdorf, and was offered a professorship at Altdorf at the age of twenty, which he declined in favor of a career in the service of princes.
Leibniz spent most of his life as a diplomat, librarian, and court counselor — first for the Elector of Mainz, then for the Duke of Brunswick in Hanover. His official duties left him time for philosophy, mathematics, and science, and he pursued them all with extraordinary energy. He invented the infinitesimal calculus independently of Newton (a priority dispute that embittered both men), designed one of the first calculating machines, and corresponded with virtually every major thinker of his age. He died on November 14, 1716, in Hanover, largely unappreciated at his death but now regarded as one of the greatest and most original philosophers of the modern period.
Historical Background
Leibniz's philosophy took shape against the background of the two great systems of the seventeenth century: the dualism of Descartes and the materialism of Hobbes. Descartes had divided reality into two substances — extended matter and thinking mind — but left unexplained how the two could interact. Later Cartesians proposed that God constantly coordinates mind and body, an expedient that seemed ad hoc. Spinoza offered a different solution: there is only one substance, with thought and extension as two of its attributes, so that mind and body are two expressions of one reality — but at the price of identifying God with nature.
Leibniz rejected both options. Descartes's interactionism was unintelligible; Spinoza's monism was, he thought, tantamount to atheism. Leibniz's own solution was both bold and strange: reality is composed of an infinite number of simple, immaterial substances — monads — each of which is a center of perception, and the world of physical bodies is a phenomenon that arises from the perceptions of monads. Mind and body do not interact; they are synchronized in advance by God, like two clocks that were set together at creation and now run in perfect harmony.

The Theory of Monads
A monad, in Leibniz's system, is a simple substance — without parts, unextended, and therefore indivisible and indestructible. Monads are the ultimate constituents of reality; everything else is a compound of monads. Each monad is unique, differing from every other in its internal states, and each monad is "windowless": it does not receive anything from outside but unfolds entirely from its own inner principle. The physical world of bodies is the appearance, to perceiving monads, of the underlying world of monads — a "well-founded phenomenon."
Every monad perceives, but the perceptions of monads differ infinitely in clarity. Bare monads have obscure, unconscious perceptions; souls have clearer perceptions together with sensation and memory; and spirits — rational minds — possess apperception, or self-consciousness. In this hierarchy, the human mind is one monad among others, distinguished by its capacity for reason and self-awareness.
Pre-Established Harmony
Since monads do not interact, how does the appearance of mind-body interaction arise? Leibniz's answer is the doctrine of pre-established harmony. God, at creation, arranged each monad so that its internal development perfectly corresponds to that of every other monad. When I decide to raise my arm, my decision is an event in my mind-monad; the arm's movement is an event in the monads that constitute my body. The two sequences do not causally interact — they correspond, because God designed them to correspond. The harmony is not a continuous miracle but a single, once-for-all arrangement at creation. This doctrine makes Leibniz the classic representative of parallelism in the mind-body problem, alongside Spinoza's attribute parallelism.
Perception, Apperception, and the Unconscious
Leibniz's account of perception is one of his most influential contributions to the philosophy of mind. Perception is the representation of the many in the one — the way a monad's internal states reflect the whole universe from its own point of view. Apperception is consciousness of perception, the self-awareness that characterizes rational minds. Crucially, Leibniz argued that most perceptions are unconscious: "petites perceptions" — the imperceptible perceptions of which we are not aware — continually bombard the mind. The roar of the sea, he observed, is composed of the imperceptible perceptions of each wave; we hear the roar but not the individual waves. This doctrine is often regarded as a precursor of the modern concept of the unconscious and of the distinction between phenomenal consciousness and non-conscious processing.
The Principle of Sufficient Reason
The metaphysical engine of Leibniz's system is the principle of sufficient reason: nothing happens without a reason why it is so rather than otherwise. Applied to the question of existence, the principle yields the conclusion that God exists and chose to create the best of all possible worlds. Applied to the mind, it underwrites Leibniz's rejection of free will understood as random choice and his determinist account of rational agency: the mind's choices are caused by reasons, which are internal to the monad.
Major Works
Leibniz's philosophical masterpiece is the Monadology (1714), a text of ninety propositions written in a single evening, which compressed his entire metaphysics into a few pages. The Discourse on Metaphysics (1686) and the correspondence with Antoine Arnauld develop the earlier version of his system. The New Essays Concerning Human Understanding (1704, published 1765) is a book-length dialogue with Locke's empiricism, defending innate ideas and rationalism — a text that directly engages the philosophy of mind. Theodicy (1710) is his most famous work in his own lifetime, defending the justice of God against the problem of evil.
Philosophical Influence
Leibniz's influence on the philosophy of mind is profound and various. His doctrine of unconscious perceptions anticipated the modern scientific study of unconscious processing and the distinction between consciousness and its neural substrate. His hierarchy of monads, each perceiving the universe from its own perspective, resonates with contemporary debates about the distribution of consciousness in nature — from the panpsychism of Galen Strawson to theories of integrated information. His formulation of the mind-body problem as a choice among interactionism, occasionalism, and parallelism remains the standard taxonomy in courses on the problem of mind and body.
In logic and mathematics, Leibniz's influence is equally immense. He conceived the idea of a universal characteristic — a formal language in which all truths could be expressed and computed — which is widely regarded as a precursor of modern symbolic logic and computation. The principle of sufficient reason and the principle of identity of indiscernibles remain live topics in metaphysics, and his concept of possible worlds was revived by Saul Kripke and David Lewis in twentieth-century modal logic.
