Jean Piaget

Biography

Jean Piaget was a Swiss psychologist and epistemologist who began publishing observations in natural history as a child. His later work investigated how knowledge develops, combining interviews and tasks with philosophical questions about logic, number, causality, and the relation between organism and environment.

Educational Contribution

Piaget did not design a single teaching method. His influence came from showing children as active sense-makers whose reasoning may differ structurally from adult reasoning. Instruction must consider the concepts learners currently use rather than assume that correct words indicate adult understanding.

Key Ideas

Schemas organize action and thought. Assimilation interprets experience through existing structures; accommodation modifies structures when they no longer fit. Equilibration describes the regulation of these processes. Piaget’s stage theory proposed broad qualitative changes from sensorimotor action toward formal reasoning.

Major Works

Major works include The Language and Thought of the Child, The Origins of Intelligence in Children, The Child’s Conception of the World, and studies of moral judgment and number.

Influence and Debate

Piaget shaped constructivism, developmental research, and early education. Later studies found greater competence under different task conditions and more variability across domains and cultures than rigid stage readings suggest. His enduring contribution is not an age chart, but the research question of how learners actively reorganize knowledge.
