Rigor is the refusal to be satisfied with reasoning that is merely plausible, approximate, or convenient. A rigorous argument admits no unexamined premise, no ambiguous term, and no suppressed step; a rigorous method specifies its procedures so exactly that others could repeat them. Rigor is what separates demonstration from persuasion: the first compels assent by the force of reasons, the second by the force of rhetoric. In ordinary life, rigor appears as the insistence on getting the details right — checking one's sources, defining one's terms, testing one's conclusions against objections. In an information environment crowded with plausible-sounding claims, rigor is the first casualty of persuasion: slippery statistics, undefined buzzwords, and arguments that "feel right." Cultivating rigor means learning to demand definitions, to trace arguments to their premises, and to distinguish a demonstration from an assertion. Formal methods now underpin computer science and artificial intelligence, where the difference between rigorous specification and hand-waving is the difference between a program that works and one that fails catastrophically.
