Consistency is the property of holding no contradictions: a set of beliefs, statements, or rules is consistent when it does not affirm both a proposition and its negation. Consistency is the lowest floor of rationality — no amount of cleverness can make a contradiction true, because a contradiction asserts everything and therefore asserts nothing. "It is raining and it is not raining" cannot be an accurate description of anything. The concept has two levels: logical consistency, the formal absence of contradiction in a system, and practical consistency, the alignment of a person's beliefs with one another and with their actions over time. Both matter: the first is the precondition of meaningful discourse, the second of trustworthy character. Consistency is the negative side of coherence — coherence is what positive support beliefs give one another; consistency is the minimal condition that they do not contradict.

Philosophical Foundations

Aristotle made consistency the bedrock of thought. In the Metaphysics and the Prior Analytics, he formulated the law of non-contradiction: nothing can both be and not be in the same respect, and this principle cannot be demonstrated because it is presupposed by any demonstration — even to deny it is to use it. Formal logic made consistency precise: a system of inference is consistent when no formula and its negation are both provable. The unwise life is inconsistent in unnoticed ways: beliefs that contradict each other, principles applied to others but not to oneself, commitments abandoned when convenient. The wise person takes consistency seriously because it is the mark of a mind that has examined itself — the person who has thought their beliefs through finds that they fit together, and the person whose beliefs fit together can act with integrity. The Socratic method is, at bottom, a consistency machine: it tests beliefs by drawing out their implications and exposing contradictions, because the discovery of inconsistency is the discovery of error. Yet wisdom also knows that consistency must not become rigidity: beliefs should be consistent with one another at any given time, but the system as a whole must remain open to revision — the demand for consistency is a demand about how beliefs are held, not a ban on changing them.

Modern Relevance

Consistency is the working assumption of every formal system — mathematics, logic, computer science, law — and Gödel's theorems are among the deepest results of modern intellectual history, showing the limits of formalization itself. In practical life, consistency is tested daily: contracts, algorithms, databases, and taxonomies all fail if they are inconsistent. Cognitive psychology shows that people routinely hold inconsistent beliefs — the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance — and spend significant energy rationalizing them away. The demand for consistency is also a tool of accountability: inconsistent claims are the easiest lies to expose, which is why rigorous interviewers, journalists, and cross-examiners hunt for contradiction. Consistency, both in argument and in life, remains the simplest and most powerful test of whether a view has been thought through.

Consistency is the minimal requirement of coherence, which adds mutual support among beliefs. It is a condition of soundness in arguments, which require both validity and true premises. Consistency is presupposed by rationality and by the very practice of logical inference.
