A deductive argument is sound when it is valid and its premises are true. Validity concerns form: an argument is valid when, if the premises were true, the conclusion would have to be true — the conclusion is contained in the premises with logical necessity. Soundness adds content: the premises must actually be true, not merely hypothetically. A sound argument therefore guarantees its conclusion — it is the strongest thing a reasoner can produce. The distinction matters because validity is cheap and soundness is expensive: countless arguments are valid but unsound because they rest on false premises ("All men are mortal; Socrates is a man; therefore Socrates is mortal" is the paradigm of soundness; "All dogs can fly; Fido is a dog; therefore Fido can fly" is valid but unsound). To evaluate an argument fully is to ask two questions: does the conclusion follow? And are the premises true? The first is a matter of logic; the second, of evidence. Soundness, in every version, names the union of logical form and epistemic warrant.

The Wisdom Dimension

The wisdom of soundness is the discipline of checking both form and content. The unwise reasoner is seduced by one or the other: dazzled by a cleverly structured argument, or impressed by a pile of facts that has not been organized into a valid inference. The wise reasoner does both checks as a matter of habit — and, crucially, in the right order of priority: since a valid argument from false premises proves nothing, the premises deserve the closest scrutiny. In law, medicine, and policy, soundness translates into the demand that conclusions rest on both sound inference and verified premises — a verdict requires both valid reasoning and admissible, true evidence. Informal logic and critical thinking pedagogy teach the validity/soundness distinction precisely because everyday argument is full of valid forms resting on questionable premises: ads, political speeches, and social media arguments are often formally fine and materially false. The skill of testing premises — asking what the claim rests on, who says so, and what the evidence shows — is the practical heart of sound reasoning in ordinary life.

Soundness presupposes validity and requires true premises, which connects it to evidence and verification. It is a component of good reasoning and coherence, and it contrasts with fallacies, which are arguments that appear sound but are not. Soundness is the deductive ideal to which consistency contributes.
