Hume's Objections

David Hume's Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, published posthumously in 1779, anticipated Paley by two decades and gave the objections that still structure the debate. Hume's character Philo presses several points. First, the analogy between the world and human artifacts is weak: the world is more like a plant or an organism than a machine, and if we infer a maker on the analogy of a watchmaker, we should also infer a mortal, finite, fallible maker, or many makers, since artifacts often have many designers. Third, we have no experience of world-making, so our reasoning about causes can't be confidently extended to the origin of the whole.

Hume also raises what later philosophers call the problem of alternative explanations. Even if order in the world needs an explanation, intelligence isn't the only candidate. The order might be intrinsic to the nature of things, or generated by a process we don't understand. Without a survey of possible explanations, the inference to design is premature. The Dialogues doesn't settle the question; it leaves the design argument as possibly some evidence but not a proof.

Darwin's Challenge

Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species (1859) gave the most serious explanatory alternative to design in the biological realm. Natural selection explains the adaptedness of organisms to their environments by gradual accumulation of small variations preserved by differential survival. The eye, the wing, the hand—each can be given an evolutionary history that doesn't require an intelligent designer. The structure of the argument is unchanged: the question is what explains functional organization. Darwin's contribution was to provide a mechanism that does so without intelligence.

The debate has become technically sophisticated, with statisticians and cosmologists weighing in. Where the Debate Stands

The teleological argument isn't a proof in the strict sense.
