Etienne Wenger

Biography

Etienne Wenger is a learning theorist known for work on situated learning and communities of practice. Trained in computer science and artificial intelligence, he collaborated with anthropologist Jean Lave and later developed the framework across organizations, professional learning, and knowledge strategy.

Educational Contribution

Wenger helped shift analysis from learning as individual acquisition toward learning as participation in social practices. People learn not only concepts and procedures, but ways of belonging, speaking, judging, and becoming recognized within a community.

Key Ideas

Legitimate peripheral participation describes how newcomers enter practice through meaningful, lower-risk participation and move toward fuller involvement. A community of practice combines a shared domain, relationships among participants, and an evolving repertoire of tools, stories, and methods. Identity is formed through participation and non-participation.

Major Works

With Lave, Wenger wrote Situated Learning. His later Communities of Practice: Learning, Meaning, and Identity developed participation, reification, identity, and boundaries.

Influence and Debate

The framework influences workplace learning, teacher networks, professional education, and online communities. Communities are not automatically inclusive or accurate: they can hoard knowledge, enforce hierarchy, and normalize poor practice. Analysis must ask who can participate, who is recognized, and how claims are tested beyond the group.
